Clarion U. Baseball Swept by Mercyhurst on Friday

DanverERIE, Pa. – The Clarion University baseball team was swept/split a PSAC West doubleheader with Mercyhurst on Friday in Erie losing game one 13-2 and game two 5-4.

The Golden Eagles the home team in both games after having to move its home games to the turf field in Erie because of the lengthy winter weather in Clarion.

In Game One, a six-run third inning by Mercyhurst put the game away early giving the Lakers an 8-0 lead at the time, and Mercyhurst led 12-0 before Clarion scored its two runs in the fifth inning.

The Golden Eagles run came on an RBI single by Joe Holmberg that scored Joey Lopez, who doubled, and a run-scoring double by Drew Pirritano, who had his first multiple-hit game of the year going 2-for-4 with the double and RBI, that scored Holmberg.

Lopez also had two hits in the contest going 2-for-3.

Troy Kumar took the loss going 3 innings and allowing eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits while striking out one. Alex Borofski allowed four runs on five hits and a walk in two innings while striking out one and Brendan Fitzgerald gave up a run on three hits and a walk in two innings of work while striking out one.

The second game saw Clarion jump out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run by Tyler Falk, the sophomores third of the season.

But Mercyhurst got two in the second and two more in the third to go ahead 4-2 before an RBI single by Derek Danver in the bottom of the third scored Pirritano, who had singled.

The Lakers got that run back on the sixth, and Clarion tried to rally in the seventh only to come up just short.

With two outs in the seventh, Jordan Mesoraco walked and scored on a Falk double to left. Danver, though grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.

Pirritano had another multiple-hit game going 2-for-4 with the run scored. Mesoraco was also 2-for-3 with the walk and two runs scored, while Falk was 2-for-4 with the home run, the double and three RBIs, and Danver was 2-for-4 with the RBI.

Sean White took the loss going four innings and allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits and four walks while striking out one. Chase Gorski pitched two innings giving up a run on two hits, while Kyle Armagost threw a scoreless seventh.

The losses drops the Golden Eagles to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the PSAC West. Mercyhurst stays perfect at 12-0 and 4-0 in the West.

Clarion returns to action with a pair of games against Mercyhurst Saturday also in Erie with the Lakers the home team this time around.
