Clarion University Talent Search Among Grant Recipients

CLARION, Pa. – The U.S. Department of Education announced the award of $144 million for 459 new grant awards under the Talent Search program. Clarion University is one of eight Pennsylvania institutions to receive funding for a new five-year grant cycle.

The award to Clarion’s Educational Talent Search program is $400,800 for the first year of the grant, which runs Sept. 1, 2016, through Aug. 31, 2017. Clarion will receive more than $2 million in the grant cycle.

ETS serves residents of Clarion, Jefferson and Venango counties by providing study skills instruction, campus visitations, SAT preparation, financial aid planning, college and career planning, and leadership training.

ETS serves students in grades six through returning adults and provides guidance through the completion of high school and admittance into a post-secondary program. Participants are selected based upon eligibility criteria established by the U.S. Department of Education.

The goal of ETS, which began at Clarion in 1990, is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education. Talent Search also encourages individuals who have not completed education programs at the secondary or postsecondary level to enter or re-enter and complete postsecondary education. Clarion’s ETS served 835 students last year, according to Rhonda McMillen-Toth, program director.
