Clarion Wrestlers Drop George Mason 23-12

CLARION, Pa. – Clarion won six of ten bouts, including a fall from heavyweight Evan Daley (Fr. Erie/Fort LeBoeuf) and major decisions from Hunter Jones (Fr. New Rochelle, N.Y.) at 125 and Justin Arthur (Fr. Huntington, W.V.) at 149 leading the Golden Eagles to a 23-12 win over George Mason in NCAA Division I Wrestling on Saturday afternoon.

Held at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium, Clarion raised its record to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in the EWL, while George Mason dropped to 6-11 overall and 0-1 in the EWL.

Hunter Jones gave Clarion a 4-0 lead by defeating Bryce Gentry 15-1 at 125-pounds. Jones had 3 takedowns and 2 near falls to post his win.

Clarion lost two close matches at 133 and 141, with Sam Sherlock (Jr. West Mifflin) dropping a 4-3 decision to Vince Rodriguez and Tyler Bedelyon (Sr. Lewistown/Indian Valley) losing 7-2 in overtime to Sahid Kargbo at 141. Rodriguez winning takedown came with 4 seconds left and Kargbo’s came in overtime.

Trailing 6-4, the Golden Eagles rallied to take an 11-6 lead when freshman Justin Arthur registered a 12-0 major decision over Shohei Takagi at 149 and freshman Austin Matthews notched an 8-2 win over Greg Flournoy at 157.

Arthur was ahead 2-1 in the second when he posted a key takedown and two stalling points for a 6-1 lead. In the third Arthur had two near falls and riding time to win 12-0.

Matthews used first and second period takedowns, along with a penalty point, reversal and riding time in the third to win 8-2.

G-M narrowed the Eagle lead to 11-9 when Ryan Forrest used a 4-point move in the third period to defeat Michael Pavasko (Fr. Munhall/Steel Valley) 5-4 at 165.

Clarion’s biggest wins of the dual came at 174 and 184 when Ryan Darch (Jr. Batavia, N.Y.) and Dustin Conti (Fr. Jefferson/Jefferson-Morgan) scored exciting wins and pushed Clarion ahead 17-9.

Darch trailed 4-3 in the third period when he reversed Zach Martinez with 10 seconds left to win an exciting 4-3 decision at 174. Then, at 184, Conti scored a big third period takedown that helped tie is match with Ryan Hembury and send the bout into overtime. Conti scored the bout winner with a counter takedown 25-seconds in OT to win 7-5.

After Clarion’s Daniel Sutherland (Jr. North Bellmore, N.Y.) lost a tough 6-5 decision to Matt Meadows at 197, Eagle heavyweight Evan Daley finished the match off with an exciting pin at 6:37 over Jake Kettler to give Clarion a 23-12 win.

Clarion travels to Bloomsburg on Sunday for a key EWL matchup at 2pm. The match will air on C-93 radio in Clarion and on redzone media on the internet.
