Clarion Wrestling to Honor Three Seniors on Sunday

bedelyon, contreras, milano 2CLARION, Pa. – The 2014 Clarion University wrestling team will have a busy weekend coming up as the Golden Eagles travel to Ohio University for an 11am start on Saturday, before returning to W.S. Tippin Gym for its Senior Day match on Sunday against Cleveland State. First whistle on Sunday is at 2pm.

The Clarion – Ohio University and Clarion – Cleveland State matches can be heard live on the radio on WCCR-FM, 92.7 in Clarion and on redzone with Rich Herman and John Stroup will be calling the action.

Clarion will honor three seniors on Sunday in pre-match ceremonies including captain Tyler Bedelyon (Lewistown/Indian Valley) at 141, Nick Milano (Erie/Cathedral Prep) at 165 and Brandon Contreras (Rochester, N.y.) at 197.

Bedelyon, who has a season record of 10-14 at 141-pounds, placed 4th at PSAC’s earlier this year. In 2013 he was an  NCAA D-I Qualifier at 149-pounds with a record of 20-16. He was 0-2 at the NCAA’s, while placing 4th at EWL’s and 3rd at PSAC’s. In 2012 he wrestled at 141 and was 18-17 while placing 2nd PSAC’s and 4th at EWL’s. A ed-shirt in 2011, he was 15-11 at 141 in 2010. He has a current career record of 63-58.

Milano is a senior, 165-pound wrestler, who has a record this year of 7-4. Last year Nick was 3-12 overall placing 6th at EWL’s and 4th at PSAC’s. He was 8-15 in 2012, mostly at 174. A red-shirt in 2011, Nick was 12-19 as a freshman in 2010 placing 4th at EWL’s. He has a career record of 30-59.

Contreras dropped in 2014 to wrestle at 197 pounds and currently has a record of 5-13. Brandon missed last year with an injury, and wrestled at 285 in 2012 and was 4-13.

Clarion, under second year head coach Troy Letters,  enters the weekend with a dual meet with a 8-11 overall record and 2-3 in the EWL record.  The extremely young Golden Eagles, who have six freshmen in their lineup, opened the season with a 2-2 mark at the Eastern Michigan duals having defeated Campbellsville (34-3) and Tiffin (43-6), while losing to Northern Illinois (21-15) and EMU 26-15. The home dual season opened on Nov. 22nd with a 30-12 loss to Rutgers, then at the Journeyman Northeast Duals Clarion lost a 21-13 decision to #11 Virginia and rebounded for wins against Columbia (20-16) and Buffalo (34-7). On December 7th Clarion was fourth at the PSAC Championships, while on December 15 Clarion lost the EWL opener to Edinboro (40-3) and on Dec. 21 lost to #25 Rider (21-16). On Jan. 12 Clarion as 1-3 at the Pitt duals, defeating Davidson 31-15 and losing to North Carolina State (30-6), Duke (28-9) and North Carolina (32-4), while on Jan. 18 Clarion defeated Brown (24-16) and lost to Bucknell (24-18). Last weekend Clarion toppled Lock Haven (18-12) and George Mason (23-12), but lost to Bloomsburg 28-8.

Clarion’s lineup will have either  Jonathan Mele (11-10, Fr. Berkely Hts., N.J.) or Hunter Jones (5-5, Fr. New Rochelle, N.Y.) at 125, Sam Sherlock (16-11; Jr. West Mifflin) at 133, Tyler Bedelyon (10-14; Sr. Lewistown) at 141, Justin Arthur (23-7; Fr. Huntington, W.V.) at 149; Austin Matthews (17-5; Fr. Greenville/Reynolds) at 157; Michael Pavasko (12-15; Fr. Munhall/Steel Valley) or Steven Nelson (5-7; Fr. Haddonfield, N.J.) at 165; Ryan Darch (14-15; Jr. Batavia, N.Y.) at 174; Dustin Conti (6-15; Fr. Jefferson/Jefferson Morgan) at 184, Daniel Sutherland (4-11; Jr. North Bellmore, N.y.) or  Brandon Contreras (5-13; Sr. Rochester, N.Y.) at 197 and Evan Daley (16-10; Fr. Erie/Fort LeBoeuf) at 285.

Ohio University, ranked #26 in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, is led by 17th year head coach Joel Greenlee. The Bobcats have a dual meet record of 9-3 and have defeated Northern Illinois (33-9), Eastern Michigan (22-13), Kent State (21-16) and Buffalo (34-6). Three losses are against Missouri (23-10), Central Michigan (19-15) and Northern Iowa (25-15.

The Bobcats feature four nationally ranked wrestlers in  #8 Tywan Claxton (21-4) at 149, #9 Cody Walters (8-1) at 174, #7 Phil Wellington (25-3) at 197 and #11 Jeremy Johnson (28-4) at 285.

Cleveland State comes to Clarion with a 1-8 dual meet record under 5th year head coach Ben Stehura. CSU’s lone win came against John Carroll (32-6), while key losses are against Duke (19-16), Indiana (25-10), Northern Illinois (25-6), Edinboro (39-4), Bloomsburg (30-8) and Lock Haven (32-6).

Cleveland State will likely have Ben Willeford (12-2) or John Martin (5-18) at 125, Daniel King (19-13) at 133, Jared McKinley (16-10) or Mike Carlone (15-9) at 141, Nick Montgomery (13-8) at 149, R.J. Labeef (10-17) at 157, Matt Donohoe (10-15) at 165, Nick Corba (13-13) at 174, Bobby Blankenship (3-8) at 184, Corbin Boone (12-9) at 197 and Riley Shaw (15-11) at 285.

CLARION NOTES:  Clarion is 24-12 vs Cleveland State in EWL matches and 26-14 overall in the teams history … Clarion is 2-5-1 against Ohio University in the all-time series … Last year Clarion lost to Ohio U – 24-18 and defeated CSU 23-9… Clarion has a 6-match win streak against the Vikings… The Eagles last lost to CSU in 2007 (44-3) … Clarion tied Ohio U. 16-16 in the 2005 season…
