Brookville Woman Faces Criminal Trespass Charges

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – A 40-year-old Brookville woman is facing criminal trespass and related charges after allegedly breaking into a neighbor’s apartment.

Court documents indicate the Brookville Police Department filed criminal charges against 40-year-old Rebecca Lynn Hunter, of Brookville.

According to a criminal complaint, around 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, Officer Gallagher was dispatched to a residence on East Main Street for an unwanted person in the residence. Officer Gallagher arrived at the residence and was met by a known woman who stated that she came over to her sister’s house to do laundry, and when she unlocked the door, the neighbor, Rebecca Hunter, was sitting on the couch.

The woman stated that she asked Hunter what she was doing in the residence, and she said that she had permission to be there. The woman told her that she needed to go, and she exited the residence.

Officer Gallagher then spoke with the apartment renters, a known female and male, and both stated that they left the residence around 4:30 p.m. and were 100% sure that they locked the door when they left. Officer Gallagher asked if the neighbor had a key or if she was allowed to be in the residence, and they both stated that she was not allowed in the residence.

The known female then told the officer that the residence was a mess and that it looked like things were gone through. She said that she knew for sure it was Hunter because she has seen her around the apartment a lot. When Officer Gallagher was walking out of the residence, he noticed the door looked like it had been pried in order to gain access.

Officer Gallagher spoke with Hunter, and she stated that she was never in that apartment and she did not know what he was talking about. He asked her where she was, and she stated that she was with another known woman until about 5:00 p.m., and then she went over to a local market to try to sell girl scout cookies. Officer Gallagher then asked Hunter’s mother if she was there, and the mother stated that she left at approximately 4:30 p.m. to take her grandson somewhere and was back at approximately 5:30 p.m., and Hunter was in the residence when she left and returned.

Officer Turnbull received a call at the station from the female resident of the first apartment. She stated that a small wooden box with a black top and a skull on it was missing from their bedroom, and it contained more than $200.00 cash, a gold chain, a watch, and some change. Police advised the residents that they would attempt to find the box.

Officers Gallagher and Turnbull returned to the second apartment and spoke with Hunter, who still continued to state that the box was not in the house anywhere and that if they wanted to, they could go ahead and check her room. They searched the room and found no sign of the box or any money.

Hunter said that box may be in the dumpster out back, so Officer Gallagher went out and checked, but he found nothing, according to the complaint.

During the interview, Hunter told the officers that “she sometimes has blackouts where she doesn’t know what’s going on,” the complaint states.

Based on the investigation, the following charges were filed against Hunter:

– Criminal Trespass-Break Into Structure, Felony 2
– Disorderly Conduct Hazardous/Physical Offense, Misdemeanor 3

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, with Judge Gregory M. Bazylak presiding.
