Cromer A. Shumaker

Screenshot_3Cromer A. Shumaker, known to all as Buck, passed away on May 28th, 2015. He was born in St. Charles on April 1, 1927 and grew up in Distant. He was the son of the late H. Cromer and Elsie Allen Shumaker.

He was married to Willovene Shaffer of South Bethlehem for 65 years. Buck served in the Navy and was stationed in Florida. He liked Florida so much that he stayed working as a plant manager for Burnup & Sims. He and Willovene lived in Florida for eight years before returning to Distant. There he joined his father to run the Armclar Gas Company. Buck was very involved in the community, serving on many boards and committees. After retirement Buck and Willie wintered in Juno Beach Florida.

He was a very active member of the Oakland Church of God serving on many committees. He also taught Sunday school for all ages, but especially liked the “Keenagers”, a senior citizen group and escorted them on many adventures in and out of the state of PA. He was instrumental in planning and supporting the continued development of the Whitehall Camp and Conference Center Church of God near Emlenton.

Buck enjoyed camping, traveling, hunting, and taking care of his various properties. He is also known for riding his Segway and John Deere tractors. One of his favorite things was attending the Shumaker Family Reunions, in various states, every 5 years since 1991. He was dearly loved by all of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and loved being surrounded by all of them.

He is survived by his wife Willovene, and sisters, Betty Seelbach Gourley of Brookville; Nancy Price and husband John of Kettering, OH and Sara Friesen and husband Cecil of San Luis Obispo, CA, and many nieces and nephews; Daughters: Jodi and husband Melvin Lufsey of New Bethlehem; Reba and husband Rod Smith of New Bethlehem; Sons: Marc and wife Mary Don Shumaker of Midlothian, VA; Jack and wife Carol Shumaker of LaOtto, IN; Grandchildren: Curt and wife Angie Lufsey of New Bethlehem, PA. Erin Wadding of New Bethlehem; Jill and Dale Gruver of Greeneville, TN; Chad and Rose Smith of Carmel, IN; Guy and Kinsley Smith of Punxsutawney; Todd and Brittany Smith of New Bethlehem; Grant Shumaker of Portsmouth VA; Scott Shumaker of San Francisco, CA; Jennie Shumaker of Midlothian, VA; Luke Shumaker of LaOtto, IN; Zachary Shumaker of LaOtto, IN and Nathaniel Shumaker of LaOtto, IN.; Great grandchildren: Cole and Shea Lufsey of New Bethlehem; Logan, Ethan, Gwyneth, and Eve Wadding, also of New Bethlehem; Declan and Neely Gruver of Greeneville, TN and Elsie Smith of Carmel, IN.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2015 and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the Oakland Church of God, 122 Kohlersburg Road, Distant.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church with the Reverend Jimmy Swogger, pastor of the Oakland Church of God, officiating.
Interment will follow in the Oakland Cemetery, Distant, Armstrong County.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Rupert Funeral Home and Cremation Service of New Bethlehem.
