CU Men’s Roundup: Golf Starts Spring Season; Baseball Drops Game to ESU


JACKSON SPRINGS, N.C. – Getting their spring season started, the Clarion University men’s golf team started this weekend at the Brown Golf Intercollegiate Invitational hosted at the Foxfire Resort & Golf Course in Jackson Springs, North Carolina.

After day one, the Golden Eagles sit in seventh place, among the 14 competing teams, with a team score of 306. Wayne State (MI) leads the field with a team score of 291.

Clarion’s Willie Hoover is tied for 11th, finishing the first round with a score of 74. Mitch Faulkner finished the day tied for 20th, carding a score of 76.

Nick Giambrone shot a 77 on day one, while Nathan Sandberg finished with a 79.

Tanner Houser rounded out the Clarion squad with a 96.

The Golden Eagles will be back out tomorrow morning for day two at Foxfire Resort.

BASEBALL FALLS TO EAST STROUDSBURG

STROUDSBURG, Pa. – After trailing for most of the afternoon, the Clarion baseball team made a late innings surge but dropped an 11-7 decision to East Stroudsburg University on Friday afternoon at Creekview Park.

The Warriors, improved to an impressive 9-4 on the early season, while the Golden Eagles drop to 7-9 on the season.

East Stroudsburg struck first in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of unearned runs off of Clarion starter Nate Torbich. The Warriors made it 4-0 in the bottoms of the third inning courtesy of a double that scored two.

The Clarion bats would strike back in the top of the fourth inning when Brian Casper scored on a balk after advancing to third on a Thomas Lavin double to cut the deficit to 4-1.

After East Stoudsburg added one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning but the Golden Eagle bats would strike for four runs in the top of the sixth inning on three hits. After Casper reached on a throwing error and Bryce Jackson doubled, Lavin brought home pinch runner Cole Shaffer to start the scoring party. In the next at bat Dillon Wolbert double and scored Jackson from second. To end the scoring for the inning Ben Barth launched a two run homerun to tie the score at five.

Freshman Bryce Grenet was tagged for four runs in the bottom of the seventh as East Stroudsburg stretched their lead to 10-5.

The Warriors would add five more in the bottom of the seventh and one run in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Clarion’s Chandler Palyas singled in the top of the ninth and scored on a Shaffer single to make the score 11-6. Jackson scored Shaffer on a single to make the score 11-7 and end the scoring for the Blue and Gold.

Clarion recorded 13 hits on the afternoon, however the Golden Eagles pitching staff surrendered seven walks while their defense committed one error.

Tiler Sadowski suffers the loss, allowing just two earned run over three innings.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Saint Anselm College with the first pitch set to cross the plate at 10 a.m.
