Curves Barnes Named Eastern League Player of the Week

CURVE, Pa. – Altoona Curve outfielder Barrett Barnes has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for August 22-28, the league announced on Monday afternoon. It marks the second Player of the Week selection for Barnes this month.

Barnes hit .409 (9-for-22) over six games with three home runs, two doubles and seven RBIs last week.

Rated as the No. 30 prospect in the Pittsburgh system by MLB.com, Barnes currently sits tied for third in the Eastern League with a .311 batting average for the season. He has also added eight homers, 26 doubles, seven triples and 43 RBIs in his 116 games played this year.

In 46 games since July 5, Barnes is hitting .399 (63/158), tops in the Eastern League during that span, with 14 doubles and 27 RBIs. He has also added seven home runs over his last 17 games since August 9.

Barnes is currently on a 12-game hitting streak, dating back to August 14, in which he is batting .413 (19-for-46) with three doubles, five homers and 12 RBIs.

A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Barnes was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round (45th overall) in 2012 out of Texas Tech.

This marks the third weekly award selection for Barnes in his professional career. He also received Eastern League Player of the Week honors on August 15, and earned a South Atlantic League Player of the Week award in June 2013.

Three Curve players have picked up weekly award recognition in the Eastern League this year. Outfielder Austin Meadows picked up the Eastern League Player of the Week selection on June 5, and Brandon Waddell was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week on June 26.
