Donald E. Welsh

Donald E. Welsh, 90, of Reynoldsville, (Stump Creek) passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2023.

He was born at home in Gaskill Township, on November 01, 1932, a son of the Roy J. Welsh and Annalee M. (Davis) Welsh.

Don was a member of the last graduating class of Big Run High School.

Mr. Welsh is a United States Navy Veteran that served during the Korean Conflict.

On June 27, 1954, he married his sweetheart, Shirley Keller.

They enjoyed sixty-eight years of marriage together.

He was a member of the Paradise United Church of Christ, and served as Treasurer, Consistory member, and a Youth Fellowship Leader for many years.

Don worked for American Water Company for forty-one years and retired in 1995.

After he retired, he was always willing to help friends and neighbors test the quality of their water.

Don was a ball of energy, always smiling, laughing and a true practical joker.

His famous line was “that he was finer than frog hair.”

He was a member of the Twin Oaks Hunting Club, Trout Unlimited, Wild Turkey Federation, Habitat for Humanity, Deputy Game Protector, Sykesville Civic Improvement, the Punxsutawney American Legion.

He loved hunting and fishing and taught the junior NRA gun safety course.

In his younger years he played baseball and basketball, and over fifty softball league.

He loved gardening and square dancing with his wife.

In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by two sons, Garry Welsh and wife Lori of Punxsutawney and Kevin Welsh and wife Susan of Reynoldsville; two grandsons, Nicholas Welsh of Punxsutawney and Nathaniel Welsh and wife Chasity of Hamilton.

Don was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters.

Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run., and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Paradise United Church of Christ.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Paradise United Church of Christ, officiated by Pastors Donna Jarrell and Barry Fillman.

Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Paradise Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Paradise United Church of Christ.
