Driver Hits Utility Pole, Overturns Car While Reading Text Message in Warsaw Township

WARSAW TWP., Pa. (EYT) – Police say a driver went off a roadway, struck a utility pole, and overturned his vehicle due to checking a text message while driving in Warsaw Township recently.

According to police, around 11:05 a.m. on October 8, a one-vehicle crash occurred on Hazen Richardsville Road just south of Brownlee Lumber.

Police say 40-year-old Andrew C. Shaffer, of Brookville, was operating a 1998 Subaru Legacy, traveling south on Hazen Richardsville Road when he received a text message.

According to police, while Shaffer was reading the message, his vehicle exited the east berm of the roadway, struck a utility pole, a mailbox, and a tree before overturning and coming to a final rest blocking the northbound lane of travel.

Shaffer was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.

Warsaw Township Volunteer Fire Company and McPherson Towing assisted at the scene.

Shaffer was cited for prohibited text-based communications.
