DuBois Inducts Four into Sports Hall of Fame

DUBOIS, Pa. – DuBois Area High School inducted four new members to its Sports Hall of Fame at halftime of the Beavers football game with Clearfield Friday night.

Joining the Hall, which is in its second year of existence, were Jim Deter, Mark Andrekovich, Suzie (Baird) Sullivan and the late Herman Wertz.

Deter, a 1987 graduate, earned multiple letters in football and track and field and led the Beavers to District 9 League championships in football in 1985 and 1986 while being named the team MVP in 1986. He was a two-time CENPAC and two-time D9 League linebacker and was a third-team All-State selection at linebacker in 1986 while also becoming one of the few District 9 players to play in the prestigious Big 33 Game in 1987. He also won a pair of District 9 titles in track and field earning the shot put crown and the 4×100-meter relay crown in 1987 before going on to start three years at Penn State at nose tackle.

A 1980 graduate of DuBois, Andrekovich played football, wrestled and participated in track and field for the Beavers. He was a two-time CENPAC first-team linebacker and a third-team All-State linebacker in 1979. He helped DuBois to the CENPAC league champion in 1978. As a heavyweight wrestler, Andrekovich won the D9 title at heavyweight in 1980, and he was the D9 champion in the high jump in 1978 before going on to play football at Clarion State College, where he earned PSAC West and East Coast Conference honors.

Sullivan, a 1990 DuBois graduate, played tennis, basketball and softball for the Lady Beavers while also participating in track and field. She won three D9 double tennis titles while helping DuBois to D9 championship in 1987, 1988 and 1989. In track, Sullivan won the D9 title in the 4×800-meter relay in 1990 that ran a school-record time of 9:50.5. She was also part of a pair of District 9 winning softball teams and four D9 Class AAAA basketball championships. Sullivan attended Lock Haven University and played basketball before returning to the DuBois area.

Wertz was a very successful coach for the Beavers in football and boys’ track and field.

As the DuBois football coach for 14 seasons (1983-88 and 1992-99) he won 87 games, the second most in school history, and seven District 9 titles while being named Coach of the Year by the local newspaper three times as well as the Coach of the Decade for the 1990s.

The head track and field coach from 1972-93, Wertz helped DuBois to nine District 9 team titles.
