Employee Charged With Over $3K in Theft from Brookville Burger King Held for Court

JEFFERSON CO., Pa. (EYT) – An employee who was charged with theft of over $3,000.00 from the Brookville Burger King was held for court on Tuesday.

Court documents indicate one count of third-degree felony theft by unlawful taking filed against 28-year-old Cory A. Shaffer, of Brookville, was held for court on Tuesday, November 3.

The charge has been transferred to the Jefferson County Court of Common Pleas.

The charge stems from an investigation initiated in early September.

Details of the case:

According to a criminal complaint, around 11:38 a.m. on September 10, Brookville Borough Police received a report of a theft of money from an employee of the Brookville Burger King.

The employee provided video surveillance footage as well as paperwork showing deleted items that did not correspond with orders. The transactions involved consisted of deleted items not found to match sales.

The employee also provided information about thefts that came from a known employee under the age of 18. The juvenile employee also agreed to give a witness statement.

The complaint notes the first employee also provided a witness statement that Cory Shaffer asked to borrow $100.00 from the business’s safe on Saturday, September 5.

According to the complaint, following a review of the documentation provided by the employee, police found that the total money stolen from the business through 313 transactions that did not correspond to orders between August 5 and September 8 amounted to $3,072.62.

Shaffer was then questioned about the theft. He reportedly denied all of the allegations and stated he did not take any money. He also told police that all of the staff members had access to manager cards.

The complaint notes Shaffer became agitated during the interview and said he could not explain all of the deletions.

According to the complaint, video evidence provided by the employee showed Shaffer taking money from the business’s safe, folding it, and placing it in his pocket. The employee also provided manager reports from two other managers showing no whole order deletions.

The complaint states police also received a report from the general manager stating several crew members went to him on September 6 about Shaffer stealing from the cash register. He also stated that when he checked the register, it was over by $138. The manager also reported she received a phone call from Shaffer asking to borrow $100.00 cash from the safe.

The complaint also notes the manager told police there is not a policy as to how cash should be handled between the registered and the safe.

The charge was filed against Shaffer through Magisterial District Judge Gregory M. Bazylak’s office on September 16.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. on November 3, with Judge Bazylak presiding.
