Gabriel Steven Barbey

Gabriel Steven Barbey, age 78, of Showers Road, DuBois, PA, died Monday, December 14, 2020, at his home after a lengthy illness.

A son of the late Gabriel Steven Barbey, Sr. and Mary (Buckshaw) Barbey, he was born on January 14, 1942, in Windber, PA. On November 23, 1960, he married Joan Elizabeth (Farinacci), who survives at home.

Along with his wife, with whom he recently celebrated their 60 year Anniversary, Gabe is survived by three children, Deborah Dixon of DuBois, Kenneth (Joanne) Barbey of DuBois and Steven (Helen) Barbey of Troy, PA; five grandchildren, Sarah Ford, Adam (Nicki) Dixon, Kenny (Lindsey) Barbey, Scotty (Autumn) Barbey, and Lorianne (Missy) Barbey; five great-grandchildren, Alivia and Easton Barbey, Jaxson and Addilyn Dixon, and Trenton Barbey; a brother, Ernest (Bonnie) Barbey of Ashtabula, OH; and two sisters, Elizabeth Ellingsworth of DuBois and Mary Jane Barbey of Parma, OH.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Paul Ellingsworth.

Gabe served in the US Navy from 1960 – ’80 where he served in numerous capacities, including Jet Mechanic, Security Officer (Military Police), Narcotics Officer, K-9 Narcotics Officer, and Rifle-Pistol-Sniper instructor. Living in various East Coast states, he had attended the Police Academy, received Narcotics Officer Training, was a Hunter Safety Course Instructor and a Game Warden in New Jersey.

He was a member of the American Legion, the American Legion Riders, Falls Creek Eagles, Penfield Firemen’s Club, DuBois Rifle & Pistol Club, the Mushroom Club, the Camouflage Inn Pool League and ABATE of Jefferson County. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting, motorcycle riding, Harley rallies and helping out with Youth Field Days as a shooting instructor.

Due to the Covid-19 crisis, a memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family suggests memorials to the Penfield United Methodist Church, Penfield Volunteer Fire Company or ABATE of Jefferson County and will be accepting online condolences at www.nedzafamilyfuneralhomes.com.

The Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home of Penfield has been entrusted with final arrangements.
