High School Baseball Roundup: Punxsutawney Tops DuBois

Monday’s high school baseball recaps.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 5, DUBOIS 3

DUBOIS, Pa. – Lance Pennington’s two-run double helped Punxsutawney score three first-inning runs, and the Chucks never looked back in getting a 5-3 win over DuBois at Showers Field in DuBois.

Pennington ended the day 3-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and four RBIs. Lucas Burkett scored three times going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, and John Matthews added a double and was 2-for-3.

Nick LaBrasca was 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and two runs scored to pace DuBois.

Pennington also picked up the win as he danced through raindrops all day long. He allowed five hits and five walks – one intentional – while also hitting a batter and striking out two in five innings of work. He allowed only two runs, however, had got a huge double play in the bottom of the third with the Chucks leading 4-2 with a run in for DuBois and the bases loaded for the Beavers.

Brandon Matthews came in with a runner on in the sixth and picked up the save allowing one run on one hit and three walks while striking out two.

Noah Schneider suffered the loss going 2 ⅔ innings giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk. Ethan Long settled things down allowing one run on four hits and four walks while striking out three in 3 ⅓ innings. Zach Sloan then pitched a scoreless seventh allowing a hit while striking out one.

DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 19, KANE 0, 3 INNINGS

KANE, Pa. – Thomas Grecco, Brandon Walker and Ty Bittner each had three RBIs, and Grecco didn’t allow a base runner in three innings on the mound, as visiting DuBois Central Catholic rolled to a 19-0, three-inning win over Kane.

Grecco was 1-for-3 at the plate and struck out six Kane batters in throwing the three-inning perfect game. He needed just 36 pitches to retired nine hitters.

Walker was 2-for-4 and also scored two runs, while Jack Frank was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jake Miknis also added a air of RBI’s. While Michael Misiewicz scored twice and drove home two for the unbeaten Cardinals (8-0).

NORTH CLARION 8, CLARION-LIMESTONE 2

FRILLS CORNERS, Pa. – Griffin Schmader and Fuquanah Seales each drove in two runs to help North Clarion to an 8-2 win over visiting Clarion-Limestone.

Schmader was 1-for-4 with a run scored, while Seales was 2-for-4.

A five-run sixth innings helped the Wolves blow open a one-run, 3-2, game.

Zayn Hargenrader scored three times for North Clarion while going 1-for-2 with a walk, and Korey Mills added an RBI.

That was more than enough for the law firm of Hargenrader, Hargenrader and Schmader on the mound.

Zayn started and went three innings allowing just one hit while striking out seven.

Zander came in and pooched the win also throwing three innings giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits and three walks while striking out two. Schmader finished off walking two and striking out one in an inning of work.

Ian Hawthorn led C-L going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Colby Himes had the Lions other hit and scored one of the C-L runs. Sam Leadbetter, who walked twice, also scored.

Christian Smith took the loss in relief of Riley Hummell. He went 2 ⅓ innings giving up five runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks while striking out four. Hummell went the first three innings allowing one unearned run on a hit and three walks while striking out three. Taylor Smith gave up an unearned run in ⅔ of an inning.
