Incoming Pitt Freshman Women’s Soccer Player Competing with Spain in UEFA European U19 Championships

PITTSBURGH – Incoming Pitt women’s soccer freshman Amaia Pena is gaining international experience before reporting to Pitt camp, traveling and competing with the Spanish national team at the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Under-19 Championships.

The goalkeeper is a veteran member of the Spanish U17 team, having appeared in six matches en route to taking Spain to a 5-2 victory over Switzerland in the UEFA Under-17 Championship final in 2015.

“We are excited to bring Amaia into our soccer family here at Pitt,” said head coach Greg Miller. “She is a tremendous talent who has a wealth of international experience playing for her country. She is a great shot stopper, solid feet and has excellent range. She will add competition and depth to our goalkeeping position.”

In Tuesday’s first round, Pena and Spain claimed a 1-0 victory over Germany. The team will look to continue its run Friday and Monday. The semi-finals and final round are set for July 28 and Jul 31, respectively.
