Janice Whitaker Hamilton

janice whitaker obitJanice Whitaker Hamilton, 85, of Charlotte beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on Tuesday February 2, 2016 at Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville following a brief illness. She was surrounded by her family.

Born on April 27, 1930 in Georgeville, PA, Janice was the daughter of the late Albert Floyd Whitaker and Mabel Frederick Whitaker and was baptized and confirmed at the Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Trade City, PA, where she became an accomplished pianist and vocal soloist. Janice was the Valedictorian of the Marion Center PA High School class of 1948. Janice subsequently pursued a 30+ year career in banking and retired in 1991 from Bank of America following promotions from teller, customer service representative, and branch manager to Vice President in
Charlotte NC.

Janice was a lifelong learner with a strong drive to excel in her many endeavors. She expressed her creativity in music, and in her later years produced dozens of artisan quality exquisitely counted cross stitch canvases. Janice enjoyed puzzles, crosswords, games, and reading historical fiction. She loved all animals and especially her basset hound, Wally. She was a wonderful listener and spoke with wisdom, grace, and wit. Above all, Janice was devoted to her family, whom she adored.

Janice is survived by her husband of 66 years, Jay D. Hamilton of Charlotte; three children, Jay Dee Hamilton (Brenda) of Lititz, PA; Douglas Allen Hamilton (Linda) of Charlotte NC; and Dena Hamilton Martin (Leland) of Middlebury, IN; and five beloved grandchildren, Mary Oyer (Sam), Janice Bullock(Josh) , Jeffrey Hamilton (Carrie), Leslie Hamilton, and Brad Hamilton. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Berdene Bish, Kathleen Morris, and Wanda Mazon; and by a grandson, Ian Hamilton.

A service to celebrate Janice’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday February 13, 2016 at Sharon United Methodist Church, 4411 Sharon Road, Charlotte NC 28211. The family will receive friends following the service. There will be a graveside service at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Covode, PA at a later date to be announced.
