According to a criminal complaint, Punxsutawney Borough Police Officer Jeffrey Winfield received a call from the Punxsutawney Hospital about an incident between Maruca and Mottern that happened on Saturday, December 23.

Mottern filed a report against Maruca for assaulting her at the Punxsutawney Police station, the complaint states.

Mottern had bruise marks on her right wrist from where she said that Maruca had grabbed her, and she had red marks around her neck from where she said he had strangled her with both hands. She said she fought back, got into her apartment, and Maruca left the area, according to the complaint.

Officer Winfield took Maruca into custody, and he noticed bruising around both of the man’s eyes, the complaint indicates.

Maruca said he and Mottern were in an argument in the car, and she reached over and punched him in the face several times. Maruca said that is when he reached over and had his hands on her throat, according to the complaint.
