Jefferson County Courthouse Evacuated After Building Fills with Smoke

courthouse-jeffBROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – The Jefferson County Courthouse was evacuated on Thursday morning when smoke filled the building following a power surge.

Jefferson Sheriff Carl J. Gotwald, Sr. told exploreJeffersonPA.com that a power surge occurred around 9:28 a.m. while Penelec was working on lines behind the courthouse.

“We believe the problem started in a transformer and a ground wire melted in the electrical system,” said Sheriff Gotwald.

The surge resulted in a full power outage and the courthouse filled with smoke.

Jefferson County 911 was called and the building was evacuated.

Everyone was permitted to the return to the courthouse around 10:30 a.m.

“There are still electrical issues within the building; however, Penelec is aware of the situation,” said Sheriff Gotwald.

Brookville Volunteer Fire Company, Pine Creek Volunteer Fire Department, DuBois Fire Department, Brookville Police Department, and Jefferson County EMS responded to the scene.

No injuries were reported.

The courthouse was evacuated in October 2016 following a similar electrical issue.
