Jefferson County Prisoner Incarcerated for Fatal Overdose Faces New Charges After Assaulting Other Inmate

PINE CREEK TWP., Pa. (EYT) — A Jefferson County prisoner—who is behind bars in connection with a fatal overdose in Brookville—was charged for allegedly jumping another inmate.

Court records show Punxsutawney-based State Police filed criminal charges against 30-year-old Fatimah Elaine Guthrie in District Judge Gregory Bazylak’s office on Thursday, April 4.

According to a criminal complaint, PSP Punxsutawney received a report of an assault at the Jefferson County Jail in Pine Creek Township around 11:15 p.m. on February 11.

Troopers were informed the victim was in the emergency room at Penn Highlands Brookville receiving treatment for her injuries. Upon arrival at the hospital, troopers observed the victim with her right eye swollen shut and a small laceration above her right eye. There was also dry blood on the side of her face and the laceration was actively bleeding, the complaint states.

The victim told police that she walked into the bathroom at the jail to fix her hair before bed, and Fatima Guthrie thought she was following her into the bathroom. The victim said she turned around “so she didn’t get jumped,” and Guthrie “flinched” at her. The victim flinched backward before Guthrie “jumped” her and threw her to the ground, the complaint indicates.

Guthrie continued to hit the victim with closed fists until the jail guards pulled her off, the complaint notes.

Guthrie was interviewed by police and refused to answer questions, stating “It’s pretty straightforward what happened and it’s all on camera. Everyone was sick of (the victim) talking (expletive) so I did something about it,” the complaint states.

Surveillance video of the incident was accurate to the victim’s recollection of events, according to the complaint.

The video showed Guthrie and the victim exit the bathroom before Guthrie assaulted the victim until guards pulled her off, the complaint indicates.

Guthrie was charged with the following:

– Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2
– Disorderly Conduct Engage in Fighting, Misdemeanor 3
– Harassment – Subject Other to Physical Contact, Summary

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 11, at 9:30 a.m. with Judge Bazylak presiding.
