John Mahlon Fitzwater

John Mahlon Fitzwater, 84, Pennsylvania Avenue, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, November 18, 2014.

Born on April 6, 1930, in Canton, PA, John was the son of the late George Edson Fitzwater and Florence Hall Fitzwater. He was the youngest of 6 children.

John made his home with his life partner, Betty LaMarca.

After graduating from high school, John served his country in the Korean War in the Army Infantry Division. Upon his return, he attended a lumber grading school in Memphis, TN and then worked for a lumber company in Tionesta, PA. He joined National Fuel Gas Company and worked with them for over 30 years in Marionville, Ridgway, Erie and DuBois.

Throughout his life, John was a great musician. He was the lead guitarist in several bands and performed at many charity events. He loved playing guitar alongside Betty on the piano, both singing with joy.

John was a member of many organizations, including the American Legion, the VFW, the NRA and the Lithuanian Club.

John and Betty found they loved the snowbird life. They began leaving earlier and earlier to make their way to their home in Bushnell, FL. While there, they continued to play music with their new snowbird friends.

John is survived by Betty LaMarca of Punxsutawney, PA, his son, Richard Fitzwater, and his wife, Judi, and their son Richard, of Spotsylvania, VA; his son, Timothy, and his wife, Lisa, and their son Connor, of DuBois, PA; his daughter Carolyn Rosenberg, and her husband, Maury, and their children Evin and Abigail, of Huntington Beach, CA; his brother, David Fitzwater, of Bath, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister Alice, brother Grant, sister Carol and sister Rose.

John was loved by his family and many friends. He brought laughter, fun and music to the lives of many.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made in John’s memory to the Gateway Humane Society, Animal Rescue Service, 1211 Airport Road, Falls Creek PA, 15840.

Friends and family are invited to come for a celebration of John’s life will be held on Sunday, November 23, 2014, from 1:00-4:00 pm at the American Legion, 315 Liberty Blvd, DuBois, PA 15801.

Interment will be private.

Arrangements are under the direction of Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.
