Joseph Michael Pitel

Joseph Michael Pitel, 75, of Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at home with his family.

He was born on April 8, 1940, in Vandergrift, Pa., a son of the late Michael Joseph and Pauline (Panfill) Pitel.

Mr. Pitel served in the United States Army.

In 1961, he married the former Karen Adell Johnston. She preceded him in death in 2004.

He enjoyed being outside, woodworking, gardening and building things. When spending time indoors, he loved to watch sports, particularly the Steelers and Pirates.

After the loss of his wife, he met a companion and friend in Anita Long. The two of them enjoyed spending time together and camping. Anita survives and resides in Punxsutawney.

He is survived by three children, Dolores McMasters and husband John of Vandergrift, Joseph Pitel Jr. and wife Gaye of New Kensington and Stella James and husband Mike of Punxsutawney; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Mattaresse of Mentor, Ohio, and Cora McVicker and husband Ron of Parma, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Karen; a daughter, Cora Frain; two brothers, William and George Pitel; and four sisters, Anna and Julie Pitel, Wanda Brown and Stella Rosensteel.

There will be no visitation. Arrangements are entrusted to Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc.
