OAKMONT, Pa. (EYT) – Thanks in part to five birdies Saturday during a partial Round 3 Saturday, Shane Lowry has taken the lead heading into Sunday’s action at the 116th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.

Lowry was 3-under par through 14 holes of his third round, which will resume early Sunday morning (7 a.m.). This after the Irish golfer had shot an even-par 70 in his second round, which also was played Saturday.

Andrew Landry continued his stellar surprise play going one over in his 31 holes Saturday including even par through 13 holes of his third round to sit in second place at 3-under par.

Lee Westwood (15 holes of round 3), Sergio Garcia (14 holes of round 3) and Dustin Johnson (13 holes of round 3) are all tied for third at 2-under par.

Johnson came into the day in the catbird seat but has had some ups and downs with his third round with a double bogey on No. 3 and bogeys at No. 6 and No. 10 that put him 2-over par for the round through 13 holes.

South African Braden Grace gave the field six golfers under par shooting a 1 under through three rounds. He is one of 42 golfers to finish the third round.

When the second round ended midway Saturday, there were a few surprises in the golfers who missed the cut, which came in at 6-over par.

Among those were Phil Mickelson, who finished at 7-under par in his two rounds, Justin Rose, who was 8 over, Rory McIlroy, who was also 8 over, and Ernie Els, who was 10 over.

With the third round to be finished started at 7 a.m. Sunday, organizers are hoping for an 11 a.m. start to the fourth round Sunday.
