Man Accused of Hitting, Choking Woman Due in Court Next Week

REYNOLDSVILLE BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) – A man accused of brutally assaulting a woman in Reynoldsville is scheduled to stand for a preliminary hearing next week.

Court documents indicate 36-year-old James Anthony Neal, of Reynoldsville, is scheduled to stand for a preliminary hearing in front of Magisterial District Judge David B. Inzana at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, on the following charges:

– Aggravated Assault, Felony 1
– Strangulation – Applying Pressure to Throat or Neck

According to a criminal complaint, on January 8, 2019, Sgt. Murray of the Reynoldsville Borough Police Department received a call from a Jefferson County Probation Officer who received a call and a photo from a known woman about a domestic incident.

Sgt. Murray responded to a residence on West Main Street where the victim was staying.

According to the complaint, the victim reported that on December 26, 2018, she and James Neal had been drinking and Neal struck her on the face several times and choked her.

The complaint notes that the victim showed Sgt. Murray photos showing that her face had been heavily bruised and she had marks on her neck consistent with being choked.

The victim reported she passed out, but was uncertain if it was from being struck and choked or from the alcohol, according to the complaint. The victim stated that the following morning, Neal was bragging about raping her two times while she was passed out.

The complaint notes that when asked why she did not report the assault earlier, the victim stated she was afraid of Neal hurting her again and said she finally reported it because Neal had left for Connecticut and was going to be gone for at least a week, which would give her time to get away from him.

Based on the investigation, Neal was arraigned at 9:06 a.m. on January 26.

Unable to post $50,000.00 monetary bail, he was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail.
