Man Accused of Taking Payment of $3,800, Never Completing Work Due in Court on Tuesday

JEFFERSON CO., Pa. (EYT) – A DuBois man who reportedly took $3,800.00 for a project in Sykesville Borough and never completed the work is due back in court on Tuesday.

Court documents indicate 55-year-old Joseph G. Sabatose is scheduled to stand for a preliminary hearing in front of Magisterial District Judge David B. Inzana at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, on the following charge:

– Theft By Deception-False Impression, Felony 3

Details of the case:

According to a criminal complaint, around 2:00 p.m. on October 11, 2019, DuBois-based State Police were dispatched to a report of a theft by deception after a known victim reported he paid Joseph G. Sabatose $3,800.00 in the form of two checks, one for $1,000.00 and another for $2,800.00, to use for items and labor to complete a project in Sykesville, Jefferson County.

The victim filed a civil suit for $3,800.00 on June 25, 2019, after he could no longer contact Sabatose, and Sabatose had not completed any of the work.

The complaint notes a disposition was made in a default judgment for the victim on July 29, 2019, in the amount of $3,936.75.

According to the complaint, on October 11, 2019, police contacted Sabatose, who reportedly stated he would contact the victim for repayment of the money he took since he did not complete the work. However, the complaint states that as of February 3, 2020, Sabatose had not made any repayment to the victim.

The charge was filed against Sabatose through Judge Inzana’s office on February 3, 2020.
