Man Allegedly Steals Elderly Punxsy Woman’s Purse in Walmart

YOUNG TWP., Pa. (EYT) – Punxsutawney-based State Police say an incident of theft and related offenses occurred at Walmart in Young Township, Jefferson County.

According to police, on February 23 an 87-year-old Punxsutawney woman dropped her purse in front of the pharmacy counter inside Walmart.

According to police, 63-year-old Robert W. Rowell, of Coolspring, allegedly took the purse and placed it in his cart and proceeded to pick up a prescription. He then walked past the vision center, the check-out registers, and the customer service desk without notifying any employees about finding the purse.

Rowell took the purse into the men’s restroom where he allegedly removed $106.00 and discarded the purse that contained credit cards, a checkbook, identification, and other miscellaneous items.

The purse was later turned into the customer service desk and returned to the victim.

The following charges have been filed against Rowell in Magisterial District Court 54-3-01:

– Theft by Unlawful Taking or Disposition
– Theft of Property Lost
– Mislaid or Delivered by Mistake
– Receiving Stolen Property
