Man Arrested in Summerville After Traffic Stop Reveals Property He Stole in New York

SUMMERVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — A transient man was arrested in Summerville with stolen property from a burglary he allegedly committed in New York.

Court records show Punxsutawney-based State Police filed the following criminal charge against 44-year-old Jeromy Adam McLean in District Judge Gregory Bazylak’s office on Thursday, April 11.

According to a criminal complaint, PSP Punxsutawney Cpl. Dennis Twigg conducted a traffic stop on a gold Chevrolet Impala along State Route 28 in Summerville Borough, Jefferson County, due to multiple traffic violations and an expired registration around 5:05 p.m. on Sunday, March 3.

Contact was made with the operator, who identified himself as Jeromy McLean. He was observed with an open Labatt Blue beer can in the center console, the complaint states.

McLean told police he did not have a driver’s license, and the vehicle did not have insurance, nor was it properly registered. He provided Cpl. Twigg with a bank card with his name on it, the complaint indicates.

During the stop, McLean appeared “overly nervous” and was “continuously rambling” while speaking with Cpl. Twigg, the complaint notes.

Cpl. Twigg asked McLean if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, tow which McLean “hesitated” and stated no. He was then asked about marijuana and stated he has a THC vape, according to the complaint.

McLean was asked to step out of the vehicle and consented to a search. During a “hand search” of the car, Cpl. Twigg located a small wooden box containing a small amount of raw marijuana in the center console. He also located a small clear plastic bag containing suspected crystal meth, and a pill bottle with suboxone, which McLean does not have a prescription for, the complaint states.

Cpl. Twigg then discovered a Dewalt Miter Saw positioned on the back seat of the vehicle. The saw had a red blade and was on a portable stand that folded up. Due to the “totality of the circumstances,” Cpl. Twigg became suspicious of the origin of the saw, the complaint indicates.

McLean was questioned about the saw and claimed he won it at a raffle. He further stated he was on his way to park up by Interstate 80 in an effort to sell it to someone. He stated he would take $600.00 for it, the complaint continues.

A background check of McLean showed he had been arrested on January 30, 2024, by New York State Police in Pittsburgh for a theft, criminal trespass, and related charges. Cpl. Twigg learned that McLean had been arrested for an incident where he stole “several thousand dollars worth” of tools, and one specific item that hadn’t been recovered was a Dewalt Miter Saw, according to the complaint.

During an interview, McLean acknowledged the previous theft, but claimed he did not take the saw. He then stated the saw was from his late father, which contradicted his earlier statement of winning it in a raffle, the complaint notes.

The saw was seized through a search warrant and photos were sent to investigators with the New York State Police. The saw was subsequently identified by the victim by defining its characteristics, such as the red blade and the portable yellow and black stand, the complaint states.

According to the complaint, McLean is a resident of New York and stated multiple times that he has been in the Summerville area for two days. He stated he was staying on a property belonging to a man named Dave, but he was unable to provide police Dave’s last name and was unsure of the address.

A further query of McLean’s criminal history showed an ongoing case with New York State Police, where he has been arrested for felony theft and burglary-related charges. Due to these circumstances, McLean was determined to be transient and a flight risk, the complaint indicates.

Additional monetary ball was set with the anticipation of New York State Police issuing a detainer regarding their charges, the complaint notes.

McLean faces a preliminary hearing on May 9, at 10:45 a.m. with Judge Bazylak presiding.
