Man Caught After Attempting to Steal Vehicle in Warsaw Township

PoliceWARSAW TWP., Pa. (EYT) – Charges have been filed against a man who was caught after attempting to steal a vehicle from the driveway of a residence in Warsaw Township.

Court documents indicate the DuBois-based State Police filed criminal charges against 41-year-old Jamie Lee Altemus, of Sarver.

According to a criminal complaint, around 3:00 a.m. on September 16, DuBois-based State Police were dispatched to a residence on Michaels Lane in Warsaw Township for a report of an unknown man in the yard of the residence. Police then searched the area but were unable to locate the man.

Around 4:04 a.m., DuBois-based State Police were dispatched to another residence on State Route 28 in Warsaw Township, near the first residence, for a report of an unknown male attempting to steal the property owner’s vehicle that was parked in the driveway.

At the scene, police spoke to the victim, who stated he was sleeping and was awakened by a noise outside. The victim then looked out of his window and saw a man in a heavy black coat getting into his truck, a black 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

According to the complaint, the victim went out and confronted the man who refused to exit the truck. The victim then struck the man with the stock of his shotgun several times, which the complaint states was not loaded. The victim reported the man pushed and shoved him and exited the truck, then walked down the driveway toward State Route 28.

The complaint notes police observed a heavy dew on the grass at a nearby mailbox that showed the marks of someone recently walking through the yard. The troopers followed the tracks on foot and found a man in a heavy black coat, matching the description of the man that had entered the truck. The man was then detained and was identified as Jamie Lee Altemus.

When asked if he attempted to steal a truck nearby, Altemus reportedly stated: “Yeah, I messed up, and that guy worked me over pretty good with a shotgun,” the complaint states.

According to the complaint, Altemus admitted to using meth around 8 p.m. on September 15 and said he had an empty bag that had contained meth in his pocket. A search of Altemus then found a clear plastic baggie containing suspected crystal methamphetamine in his pants pocket. The complaint notes Altemus also showed signs of impairment from a controlled substance.

Altemus was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Gregory M Bazylak at 12:09 a.m. on September 16, on the following charges:

– Theft By Unlawful Taking-Movable Property, Felony 3
