Marjorie Werner Conrad

Marjorie Werner Conrad, age 97, of George Street, St. Marys, Pennsylvania died peacefully on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Laurelbrook Personal Care Home in Brookville, Pa.

She was born May 5th, 1925 in St. Mary’s, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Edith Kaul Werner of St. Marys, and she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

On April 3, 1948 in Erie, Pennsylvania, she married Harry S. Conrad Jr. of St. Mary’s who predeceased her death on April 2, 2006.

They were both lifelong residents of St. Mary’s and enjoyed traveling together throughout the U.S. during their 58 years of marriage.

She and her husband wintered in Miami Beach for 18 years after her husband’s early retirement.

Margie, affectionately known by family and friends, was a 1942 graduate of Central High School.

Her yearbook stated that she was “One of our brunettes with a beautiful smile and pleasant voice. Due to her artistic ability she was chosen as our class artist. Her cheerful countenance and gracious manner will be valuable assets to her after graduation.”

Marjorie worked as the assistant cashier of the former Farmers and Merchants Bank for 25 years.

She was also the assistant secretary and treasurer of the former St. Mary’s Savings and Investment Association in St. Mary’s.

Marjorie was a member of the St. Mary’s Church and the Franciscan St. Anthony’s Guild.

She contributed to the priests of the Sacred Heart Monastery and the Basilica of the National Shrine in Washington, D.C. to say masses for her friends and family on special occasions.

She was a member of the former St. Mary’s Country Club and Elk County Country Club of Ridgway.

In her former years, Marjorie enjoyed fashion and participated in many fashion shows sponsored by Elk County local retailers.

Admiring wildlife, she was a member of the National Wildlife Federation, and a member of the Miami Yacht Club of Miami, Florida.

Marjorie was an avid movie buff and current events enthusiast.

She enjoyed traveling, swimming, reading, playing bridge, and speaking to friends and family members on a regular basis.

She was capable and adventurous and enjoyed driving well into her nineties.

Marjorie was a true role model. Her family members will remember her beautiful smile, enthusiasm for life, courageousness, strength of character, and constant generosity.

She is survived by two daughters, Christine Conrad Cazes of Westchester County, Thornwood, New York, Candace Conrad Baka of Brockway, Pennsylvania, a son-in-law, Lloyd Jerome Cazes of Thornwood, New York, and brother-in-law, William Conrad of St. Marys, Pennsylvania.

She is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Nicole Cazes Morales of Cortlandt Manor, New York, Clifton Conrad Cazes of Stamford, Connecticut, Amber Lee Beningo of Brockway, Pennsylvania; and four great grandchildren, Julia Morales, Xander and Xavier Goodwin, and Leonardo John Cazes.

Preceding her in death included one brother, Arthur G. Werner in August of 1971, and 5 sisters, Rita Werner in 1923 who died from pneumonia at 7 years of age, Helen Werner Fritz in March, 2008, Edith “Pete” Werner Knoll in 2011, Virginia “Budgie” Werner Leopold in 2012, and Thecla Werner Coppolo in March, 2014.

Also preceding her death was a sister-in-law, Beverly Conrad Bourne. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, and other family members.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Marjorie W. Conrad will be celebrated on Monday, March 27, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the St. Marys Church, Church Street, St. Marys, PA 15857 with the Rev. Thomas More Sikora, OSB, officiating.

Interment will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held privately.
