One Man Transported to Punxsutawney Hospital Following Two-Vehicle Collision

GASKILL TWP., Pa. (EYT) – One man was transported to Punxsutawney Hospital following an unusual two-vehicle crash that occurred in Gaskill Township on Wednesday.

According to police, around 1:44 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, a two-vehicle crash occurred on Mill Road in Gaskill Township, Jefferson County.

Police say a 1998 Ford Explorer, operated by 24-year-old Dennis M. Coombs, of Rossiter, was being towed by a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by 23-year-old Christopher J. Mitchell, of Falls Creek, both traveling north on Mill Road.

According to police, the Explorer then entered the oncoming lane, passing the Silverado, and the chain used to tow the Explorer caused the Explorer’s front end to pull the Silverado’s rear end in a clockwise direction. Both vehicles then began to skid down the roadway and onto the eastern berm.

The Silverado’s front end struck a tree on the eastern berm. The vehicle was then pulled from its point of impact by the chain. It came to a final rest in the northbound lane, facing south.

The Explorer skidded off the road, and the chain tightened, causing it to overturn onto its passenger side, where it came to a final rest.

Coombs, Mitchell, and Mitchell’s passengers – identified as 21-year-old Oreahna S. Schaffer and 26-year-old Zachary T. Coombs, both of Punxsutawney – were using seat belts.

Dennis Coombs was transported to Punxsutawney Hospital by Big Run Area Volunteer Fire Company as a precautionary measure for suspected minor injuries.

Mitchell, Schaffer, and Zachary Coombs were not injured.

Both drivers were cited for traffic violations.

Brosius Towing also assisted at the scene.
