Held in front of 2,875 wrestling fans at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium, (capacity 3,140), the loss drops Clarion’s season record to 0-5, while Penn State raised its record to 3-0.

Golden Eagle senior Sam Sherlock led in his match at 149, and Evan Daley also led at heavyweight, bring the crowd to its feet.

Sherlock wrestled #17 Zack Beitz and 149 and came out smoking. He scored an early first period takedown, and after a Beitz escape, scored a second takedown to lead 4-1. Beitz escaped and scored a late takedown in the first to tie the bout at 4-4. After Beitz escaped in the second, he added a takedown and three near fall points to lead 10-4 after two and ended up winning the bout 15-5.

At heavyweight Daley came out with a quick ankle pick and scored a takedown on #9 rated Jon Gingrich at 285. Daley nearly had a second takedown midway through the first on the same move, but Gingrich was able to mount a defense. In the second period Gingrich chose down and escaped to tie the bout 2-2. Daley chose down in the third, and when he escaped 15-seconds into the period to lead 3-2, the Clarion crowd, which stayed to the end, erupted its approval to try and urge the Eagles sophomore on to victory. Midway through the period Gingrich scored a double leg takedown to go ahead 4-3, but Daley escaped with about 45-seconds left to tied the match again at 4-4. Gingrich scored the bout-winning takedown with 27-seconds left, and after an injury timeout, saw Gingrich get an escape and late takedown for a 9-4 win that was much closer than the final score.

Clarion true freshman Evan DeLong wrestled a quality match against Cody Law before losing 5-1 at 157. After a scoreless first period, Law received a stall point in the second for a 1-0 lead. An escape and takedown for Law in the third, and a DeLong escaped accounted for the remainder of the scoring.

Penn State went on to win all ten bouts, including technical falls at 125 and 197, and had pins at 133 and 174.

Clarion will travel to Rider next Sunday to wrestle the Broncs at Noon and Penn at 2pm.
