Peterson’s name was recently removed from the university’s athletic website, and Clarion University Sports Information Director Sean Fagan confirmed she was no longer employed at the school but didn’t specify where she had resigned or had been relieved of her duties.

“Cheryl Peterson is no longer with Clarion University,” Fagan said. “We will not comment further on personnel matters.”

An 0-43 season spelled the end of Peterson’s reign. She had led the Golden Eagles for five years and won 23 games while losing 179. Clarion has lost 48 straight games dating back to last season.

Peterson is the fourth head coach since June 2018 to “no longer” be with Clarion University.

Men’s basketball coach Marcess Williams had his contract not renewed after a 6-20 season, women’s soccer coach Sean Esterhuizen also had his contract not renewed after a 3-14-1 season and in June interim women’s track & field coach Ben Bevevino was not offered the full-time position.

Esterhuizen has been replaced by Afrim Latifi on an interim basis, while Jason Falvo was hired to replace Bevevino and led the Golden Eagles to a 14th-place finish this past weekend at the PSAC Track & Field Championships.

Williams has not been replaced yet, although Fagan said the University will be announcing open candidate forums sometime this week for potential replacements.

In addition to those moves, Cynthia Copenhaver was hired to take over the women’s tennis program in late August 2018.

With all of the turnover, the Golden Eagles have only three head coaches who have been head coaches for more than five years at the school.

Dave Hrovat recently completed his 30th season with the school, women’s volleyball coach Jen Herron completed her 12th season in charge and men’s golf coach Marty Rinker completed his ninth season. In addition, women’s basketball coach Jana Ashley and wrestling coach Keith Ferraro both just ended their fifth seasons at the helm of their respective sports.
