Phyllis Jean Dempsey, age 77, of Brookville, PA, was granted her wish of passing peacefully at her home in Brookville, surrounded by her loving family.
She passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, in the early hours of the morning. She was born on July 9, 1938, to the late John D. and Meredith (Hilliard) Shick, in Beautiful Lookout, PA.
On September 15, 1956, she married Ralph LaSalle Dempsey, in Cumberland, Maryland. They were married for 52 years before Ralph’s passing in 2008. Phyllis was part owner with her parents of Shick’s Laundromat in Brookville, PA and later worked for the Harper House in Summerville, PA, for over 20 years. She worked hard throughout her life and it was widely known that her family was most important to her above all else.
She looked forward to spending holidays with her family and she loved camping with them. She and Ralph loved to travel together in their camper with their family; it didn’t matter much where they were going, they just loved to go.
Phyllis loved to read as time permitted. She was good with people and her kind heart allowed her to be a caretaker to adults with special needs; her love and patience helped add to a more fulfilling life of those she cared for.
Her family loves and misses her deeply. She is survived by her 3 children, Darlene (Randy) Gorske of Cambridge Springs, PA; Richard “Dick” (Nancy) Dempsey of Brookville, PA; and Edith “Edie” (Brian) Gross of Orrstown, PA; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
She was lead to the gates of Heaven by her husband, her close cousin Bill, her parents, and her brother Donald Shick.
In keeping with her wishes there will be no public services but memorial contributions may still be made in her name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, MSC 512 Memphis, TN.
