PUNXSUTAWNEY BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) – Two local residents are charges following a recent incident where they allegedly stole food from a local store in the presence of a juvenile.

Court documents indicate the Punxsutawney Borough Police Department filed the following criminal charges against 42-year-old Jason Lee Myers and 29-year-old Kayla Lynn Barnett, both of Punxsutawney:

– Retail Theft-Take Merchandise, Summary, Felony 3
– Corruption of Minors, Misdemeanor 1
– Theft By Unlawful Taking-Movable Property, Misdemeanor 3
– Receiving Stolen Property, Misdemeanor 3

According to a criminal complaint, on December 4, the Punxsutawney Borough Police Department received a complaint from a known employee of a local convenience store about a theft. After reviewing security footage from the previous night, it was discovered a man and woman entered the store and stolen several items.

Officer Zeitler then reviewed the video footage from the store. The complaint states the video showed the man, who was identified as Jason Myers, and the woman, identified as Kayla Barnett, entering the store with a young juvenile around 5:00 p.m on December 3.

According to the complaint, Barnett went to one of the aisles and picked up at least three Slim Jims and put them in her left jacket pocket. Barnett and Myers then went to a cooler and took three large drink cans and placed them in Barnett’s purse. They then took two two-liter bottles of pop and placed them on the front counter.

The complaint notes the clerk left the front counter, and Barnett and Myers then went to the cooler in the front, near the counter. The couple then took four sub sandwiches and placed them in Barnett’s purse. Myers and Barnett also allegedly took an unknown product that was for sale in front of the counter. Myers was also seen taking no less than five of the long style Slim Jims from the front counter and placed them in his left front pants pocket.

The complaint notes Barnett and Myers both took the items with the juvenile watching them commit the crime.

Barnett and Myers were interviewed on December 4, and both agreed to give statements on the incident. According to the complaint, they both admitted to taking the items. Myers stated he took hoagies, gum, and Slim Jims. The complaint notes he stated he was intoxicated at the time and had no food in the house. Barnett told police she took hoagies, gum, and three cans of Monster energy drink.

According to the complaint, they were both advised charges would be filed and told they are no longer welcome at the store.

The complaint notes the total amount stolen was $31.54, and restitution is requested.

The charges were filed through Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline J. Mizerock’s office on December 10.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on January 21, with Judge Mizerock presiding.
