BROOKVILLE BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) – Felony assault charges have been filed against a Reynoldsville woman who allegedly attacked two employees at Penn Highlands Brookville on Monday.
Court documents indicate 43-year-old Theresa K. Fry was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Gregory M. Bazylak at 9:00 a.m. on March 16, on the following charges:
– Aggravated Assault – Fear of Imminent Serious Bodily Injury, Felony 2
– Disorderly Conduct Engage in Fighting, Summary
Unable to post $10,000.00 (10%) monetary bail, she was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail.
The charges stem from an incident that took place at Penn Highlands Hospital in Brookville on Monday.
According to a criminal complaint, around 9:57 p.m. on Monday, March 15, Brookville Borough Police were dispatched to Penn Highlands Hospital in Brookville for a report of a woman assaulting staff members.
At the hospital, police spoke to a hospital employee who reported that the woman in question, identified as Theresa Fry, was swearing and causing issues about trying to go to drug rehabilitation and that none were able to accept her. The employee said they had attempted to get the woman to stop causing a scene by dressing and moving her things in the middle of a walkway.
The employee indicated staff members had asked the woman to relax and explained that in a hospital, she shouldn’t cause a scene while other patients are there.
According to the complaint, the employee reported Fry then raised her arms and shoved her (the employee) backward, causing her to trip and fall. The employee said Fry then grabbed a folding chair and moved toward a second staff member with the chair in her arms extended above her head in an attempt to hit the staff member.
The employee told police she was able to take the chair from Fry before Fry was able to hit the second staff member. She said she then escorted Fry to her bed, where Fry began to remove the mattress while making suicidal statements, the complaint states.
Police then spoke to Fry about the incident.
According to the complaint, Fry reported she did use her forearm to “move” the first employee out of her way, and the employee then fell. However, she denied trying to strike anyone with a chair, saying she intended to hit herself in the head with the chair.
Fry was then medically cleared by hospital staff for jail, and discharge paperwork was provided to police.
The complaint notes that later, in a monitored room at the Brookville Borough Police station, Fry managed to slip out of her left handcuff and grabbed for a pen when officers went into the room to secure her.
She was then placed in a wristlock as she reportedly continued to attempted to pull her arm forward and away to prevent the officers from securing her.
When police were escorting Fry to the holding cell, she also reportedly attempted to hit her face off of a picture frame in the hall and was pulled away and forward to the ground to avoid her injuring herself with glass and/or obtaining a shard of glass to injure herself or the officers.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. on April 6, with Judge Bazylak presiding.
