Police: Teens Seriously Injured in Dirt Bike Crash Were Using Smartphone Flashlight to Light Roadway

BANKS TWP., Pa. (EYT) – State Police said two Jefferson County teenagers traveling on a dirt bike and using a smartphone flashlight to light the roadway were seriously injured after the bike they were riding on crashed early Saturday morning.

Punxsutawney-based State Police said the accident happened around 1:07 a.m. when a 17-year-old male lost control of his 2014 Yamaha dirt bike while traveling on Johnsonburg Road in Banks Township, Indiana County.

According to Tpr. Malloy, the driver overcompensated while attempting to negotiate a right turn, causing the dirt bike to exit the roadway and crash.

Tpr. Malloy said the dirt bike did not have a headlamp system, and a 17-year-old male passenger on the bike was attempting to use a flashlight from a smartphone to light the roadway at the time of the accident.

The teens, both from Punxsutawney, were LifeFlighted to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment of serious injuries.

There is no word on their current conditions.

Charges are pending.
