Punxsy Man Accused of Assaulting Trooper at Local Hospital

YOUNG TWP., Pa. (EYT) – State police responded to a report of disorderly conduct in Young Township on Monday that ended in assault charges being filed against a Punxsutawney man.

Around 2:48 pm. on Monday, March 2, Punxsutawney-based State Police investigated a reported incident on Walston Road, in Young Township, Jefferson County.

During the investigation, it was learned that 41-year-old Michael Shaffer, of Punxsutawney, was under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance and had left the scene in a 2002 Chevrolet Blazer, according to police.

Police then encountered Shaffer at this residence and observed numerous signs of impairment. He was transported to the Punxsutawney Area Hospital where he reportedly “became unruly” and assaulted one of the troopers.

According to police, the trooper involved did not sustain any injuries from the assault.

Court documents indicate Shaffer was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline J. Mizerock at 7:40 a.m. on Tuesday, March 3, on the following charges:

  • Aggravated Assault – Attempts to cause or causes Bodily Injury to designated individuals, Felony 2
  • DUI: General Impairment/Incapable of Driving Safely – 1st Offense, Misdemeanor
  • DUI: Controlled Substance – Impaired Ability – 1st Offense, Misdemeanor
  • DUI: Controlled Substance – Combination Alcohol/Drugs – 1st Offense, Misdemeanor
  • Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2
  • Resist Arrest/Other Law Enforcement, Misdemeanor 2
  • Disorderly Conduct-Unreasonable Noise, Misdemeanor 3
  • Harassment – Subject Other to Physical Contact, Summary
  • Disorder Conduct Hazardous/Physical Offense, Summary
  • Public Drunkenness And Similar Misconduct, Summary (two counts)
  • Operate Vehicle Without Valid Inspect, Summary

He remains lodged in the Jefferson County Jail pending $40,000.00 (10%) monetary bail.

A date for a preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
