Punxsy Man Accused of Choking Woman to Unconsciousness

BELL TWP., Pa. (EYT) – A Punxsutawney man is behind bars following an altercation in which he allegedly choked a woman to unconsciousness.

According to court documents, Punxsutawney-based State Police filed the following criminal charges against 47-year-old John Paul Wingert on October 7:

– Strangulation – Applying Pressure to Throat or Neck, Felony 2
– Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2
– Harassment – Subject Other to Physical Contact, Summary

According to a criminal complaint, between 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. on October 5, John Paul Wingert and a known female victim allegedly entered into a verbal altercation at a residence on Robertsville Road in Bell Township, Jefferson County.

The altercation became physical when Wingert allegedly shoved the victim onto a bed and began to strangle her with his right hand, the complaint states.

According to the complaint, the victim began to lose consciousness, and Wingert then shoved her throughout the bedroom. After a short time, the victim was then able to free herself from Wingert, but Wingert then allegedly attacked her again and began to choke her on the porch. The victim reported that she then woke up on the bed.

The complaint notes the victim suffered injuries to her neck, chest, and legs/knees. Visible scratches and bruising were observed.

Wingert was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline J. Mizerock at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 8.

Unable to post $20,000.00 monetary bail (10%), he was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, with Judge Mizerock presiding.
