Punxsy State Police Warn Public About Counterfeit Money Orders

CANOE TWP., Pa. (EYT) – State Police say a man tried to purchase a saddle with a counterfeit U.S. Postal Service money order last week.

According to police, around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, an individual using the suspected false name Joshua Kigler attempted to purchase a saddle from a known 26-year-old woman in Canoe Township with a counterfeit U.S. Postal Service money order.

The counterfeit money order looked very authentic, but it was made out for more than the listed price of the saddle. The woman realized something was not right and brought the money order to the Punxsutawney-based State Police.

According to police, if the woman had attempted to deposit the counterfeit money order, she would have been subject to penalties days later when it did not clear. The individual who attempted to use the money order would then have attempted to pick up the saddle prior to the money order not clearing and would have had the woman pay the difference, which she would never receive. The woman’s quick thinking kept her from becoming a victim in this case.

Police say anyone with related incidents is advised to use caution before proceeding with a transaction which appears to be too good to be true.
