Punxsy Woman Jailed for Allegedly Stealing Jar of Nuts from Local Store

handcuffsPUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (EYT) – A Punxsutawney woman has been accused of retail theft from a grocery store on West Mahoning Street, in Punxsutawney, Jefferson County.

According to court documents, the Punxsutawney Borough Police Department filed criminal charges against 40-year-old Sonya Marie Mosey, of Punxsutawney.

According to a criminal complaint, the manager of a grocery store on West Mahoning Street, in Punxsutawney, stated that around 11:44 a.m. on October 29, a woman came into the store and selected a jar of mixed nuts off the shelf with a retail value of $12.99. She walked through the store, put the jar of nuts in her purse, then came to the register, pulled out the jar of mixed nuts, and tried to return them for cash.

The complaint states that the store changed its policy and will only make returns with a receipt in which the woman did not have. The woman then left the store with the jar of mixed nuts that she did not pay for.

Police were provided with the store video from the security system which confirmed the manager’s account of events.

On Thursday, November 10, the manager from the grocery store called the Punxsutawney Borough Police Station and stated the woman from the described incident was back in the store. Punxsutawney Borough Police made contact with the woman who was identified as Sonya Marie Mosey, according to the complaint.

Based on the investigation, a criminal complaint was filed against Mosey in District Judge Douglas Robert Chambers’s office.

She was arraigned at 11:00 a.m. on November 14 on the following charges:

  • Retail Theft – Take Merchandise, Felony 3
  • Receiving Stolen Property, Misdemeanor 3
  • Theft By Deception – False Impression, Misdemeanor 3

Unable to post $25,000.00 (10%) monetary bail, she was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on November 29 with Judge Chambers presiding.
