Rick’s Racing Roundup: Fuzzy Fields Tops Field at Thunder Mountain

The weather has been a factor all season and this past weekend wasn’t any different. Several tracks battled Mother Nature to get their racing programs completed.

Despite early day showers and more rain in the area Lernerville Speedway was able to stay dry and get their Friday Fab 4 program in the books.

It was a great night to be a track champion as the defending champions in all four classes ended their nights in victory lane. Modified champion Mat Williamson picked up his fifth win of the season while stock car ace Corey McPherson picked up win No. 4 on the season.

Russ King won the late model feature guaranteeing him a starting spot in this weekend’s Firecracker 100. Jack Sodeman Jr’s sprint car win does the same for him but for the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup when the World of Outlaw sprint cars invade next month.

As mentioned above, this weekend the biggest late model race in the area will take center stage at the action track. Lernerville and the World of Outlaws will present the 11th annual Firecracker 100 with things getting underway this Thursday evening. Thursday and Friday will feature full programs and $6,000 to win features both nights.

The Firecracker 100 main event will go down on Saturday night with the World of Outlaw late models going 100 laps for a $30,000 payday. Saturday will also feature the Uncle Sam 30 with a $3,000 to win event for non-qualifiers. The event will also carry a Sunday, June 25 rain date.

Thunder Mountain Speedway was able to dodge the rain Friday night where the Penn-Ohio Pro Stock Series headlined the card.

Fuzzy Fields bested Rusty Martz to take home the victory. Other winners at Brookville oval included; Jim Fye (4wd), Bob Dorman (late model), Nate Smith (semi-late), Paul Kot (mini stock), and Chad Greeley (4 cylinders).

Thunder Mountain will not be racing this weekend due to the Firecracker 100 at Lernerville. The ULMS Late models will return the following Friday through for a big $3,000 to win show.

Mercer Raceway Park was able to complete action on Saturday night and after a couple years off Rod George proved he is back up to speed with his first win of 2017. Just a few weeks ago George finished second to his new teammate Cory Good at Mercer. This time it was Rod’s turn as he returned to MRP victory lane for the 38th time in his career.

Andy Priest and Jimmy Holden both had good nights as Priest scored his fourth feature of the season in 305 sprint car competitions while Holden recorded victory No. 5 in 358 modified action. Other winners at Mercer included Isaac Paden; mini stocks, and Mark Marcucci; mod lites. Mercer will be back in action this Saturday with another five division racing program on tap.

With rain forecasted most of the day and evening Tri-City Raceway opted to cancel their Father’s Day racing program Sunday. The track will try again this Sunday with the scheduled rain date. Once again the 410 sprint cars will headline the program. The Allegheny Sprint Tour will make their second appearance at the Venango County oval.

Joining them will be a RUSH double header of crate late models and modifieds. For the late models, it will be the annual “Bill Emig Memorial” that will find the winner taking home two thousand dollars for their efforts. The four division racing program is scheduled for 6 p.m.
