WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Clarion volleyball team saw its four-match win streak snapped on the road on Saturday, as the Golden Eagles fell 3-0 (14-25, 21-25, 21-25) to the West Chester Golden Rams in a PSAC match.

Clarion (9-7, 3-1 PSAC) will return home for a pair of matches at Tippin Gymnasium next weekend.

Mackenzie Biggs had a team-high 10 kills on 26 swings, committing just three errors for a .269 hitting percentage. Taylor Braunagel added seven kills, while Marissa Robertson had five kills and seven digs. Catherine Ferragonio had a team-high 11 digs while Biggs and Olivia Olson each added three blocks.

The Golden Rams broke a 5-5 tie early in the first set and took a 9-5 lead after a block by Abbie Dischert and Allie Duffy. West Chester cruised to a 25-14 win in the first set but the Golden Eagles were more equal to the task in the second. Clarion took a 6-2 lead off a service ace by Ferragonio, and the lead increased to 10-5 after a kill by Braunagel.

West Chester tied it at 13-all on a solo block by Victoria Cruciani, but Braunagel fired back and tied it at 18-18 on a kill. That was the last time it was tied, however, as the Golden Rams went on a 7-3 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

West Chester took a 14-11 lead in the third set off a kill by Allie Duffy, but Lauryn Driscoll pulled Clarion to within 19-16 with a kill of her own, capping a 3-0 run in the process. The Golden Eagles pulled to within one point on an error by Duffy, but the Golden Rams scored the final three points of the match to take the win.

SOCCER CAN’T HANDLE MANSFIELD

CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion women’s soccer team squared off against a PSAC opponent in less than ideal weather conditions, and the Golden Eagles fell by a 3-0 score to Mansfield at Memorial Stadium. Clarion (2-8-2, 2-7-1 PSAC) will head on the road for the next two games before returning home to face Slippery Rock on Oct. 11.

Clarion finished with six total shots on net, including five in the first period, but were unable to sneak one past the keeper as the Mountaineers claimed the win.

Mansfield’s Delaney Meadows scored a pair of goals in the first half, giving the Mountaineers the only tallies they needed in the contest. The first came on a lead pass from Caitlyn McNichol, with Meadows taking the feed and firing it into the lower left-hand corner past goalkeeper Krista Mosi in the 11th minute. The second came when she recovered a shot and deflection off Mosi at the top of the box in the 19th minute; she settled the ball and sent it to the back of the net to make it 2-0.

The best Clarion opportunity in the first half came when Charlotte Allen redirected a shot on goalkeeper Rachel Fox in the 44th minute. Marina Kelly lined a sharp cross through the box to Allen, who slid into the ball but could not sneak it past Fox. Kelly also had multiple opportunities on net, firing shots from long range but she was unable to pick the corner.

Eleni Gebbia scored on a play off a throw-in early in the second half, bending a shot into the corner to make it 3-0.
