Scam Artists Target Local Residents

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) – Pennsylvania State Police Troop C, Punxsutawney, are advising residents about scam artists who are targeting local individuals.

Police say the cases they are learning about deal with the subject calling a resident and representing him/herself as an IRS agent, telling the victims that they owe the IRS an amount of money that needs to be paid immediately.

One option presented to the victim is to purchase pre-paid cash cards and call back with the card numbers. Once the numbers are given to the perpetrator(s), they have access to all the money on that card, and there is very little, if anything, that can be done to retrieve it.

With most of the transactions taking place out of the country, a successful investigation and prosecution is very unlikely, according to police.

Anytime a call is received advising to pay any agency, company, or individual any amount of money, verification should be made before turning over any money. If there is any question at all, alert the authorities immediately.
