Sigel Man Life-Flighted to Pittsburgh Hospital Following Two-Car Crash on Route 36

ELDRED TWP., Pa. (EYT) – A two-car crash occurred Saturday morning on State Route 36, at its intersection with Gordon Drive, in Eldred Township, Jefferson County.

According to Marienville-based State Police, 49-year-old Rodney C. Mealy, of Leeper, and 39-year-old Irvin S. Pontious, of Sigel, were involved in the collision.

Police say Pontious was traveling southbound on Route 36 in a 2011 Nissan Ultima around 11:55 a.m. on June 3. He was stopped and was attempting to turn left. A 2015 Chevrolet Cruz, driven by Mealy, was also traveling southbound and struck the Nissan in the rear.

The Nissan was forced into the center roadway, partially in both north- and southbound travel lanes.

Mealy was transported to Brookville Area Hospital for suspected minor injuries.

He was not using a seat belt.

Pontious was life-flighted by STAT6 Helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh for suspected serious injuries.

A passenger in Pontious’ car – 37-year-old Renee S. Pontious, of Sigel – was treated at the scene by Brookville EMS for suspected minor injuries.

Both occupants in the Nissan were using seat belts.

The southbound lane of Route 36 was closed for approximately one hour, and traffic control was provided.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Sigel Volunteer Fire Department, Snyder’s Auto Body, and McPherson’s Towing assisted state police at the scene.

Mealy was charged with a traffic violation.
