State College Spikes Top Batavia, 8-6

BATAVIA, N.Y. – Danny Hudzina produced four hits, including his second home run of the season, and the State College Spikes held on late to defeat the Batavia Muckdogs, 8-6, on Sunday afternoon at Dwyer Stadium.

Hudzina became the fourth Spikes (24-12) player to collect a quartet of hits in one game this season, following Tommy Edman, Dylan Tice and Jose Martinez. The 2016 10th-round draft choice out of Western Kentucky delivered three singles to go with his solo homer off Batavia (7-29) starter Ryan McKay (1-3) in the fourth inning. Hudzina drove in three runs on the game as well.

Jeremy Martinez also extended his on-base streak to 21 games with a pair of hits, including a run-scoring single in the seventh.

The Spikes had to withstand a late Muckdogs rally to gain the win, as Batavia scored five runs in the eighth to draw within two. Corey Bird drove in a pair of runs with a single, Mike Garzillo followed with a two-run double and an error brought in the last Muckdogs run of the frame. Garzillo finished the game a homer shy of the cycle.

Edman put the Spikes on the board in the first after being hit by a pitch, stealing second and advancing home on two wild pitches. Matt Davis also knocked in a run with a single in the second.

Vince Jackson then drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Ryan McCarvel singled in a run in the same frame.

Bryan Dobzanski (3-3) earned the win for the Spikes with five one-run innings on the mound. Dobzanski yielded two hits and three walks while striking out three batters.

McKay took the loss after giving up five runs, four of them earned, on six hits two hit batsman. The right-hander also uncorked three wild pitches, but struck out three batters.

The Spikes and Muckdogs now meet in the middle game of their three-game series at Dwyer Stadium on Monday. Left-hander Dewin Perez (2-1) gets the ball for State College in the 7:05 p.m. matchup, while Batavia will send right-hander Jose Diaz (0-3) to the mound.
