Tractor-Trailer Crashes, Jackknifes on I-80 During Heavy Snowstorm

Police car lightsWASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (EYT) – According to DuBois-based State Police, a one-vehicle crash occurred in Washington Township, Jefferson County, Pa.

Police say around 4:00 p.m. on January 29, 30-year-old Ion F. Lungu, of Chicago, IL, was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 in the left lane in a 2007 Volvo during a heavy snowstorm which produced white-out conditions.

Lungu perceived a traffic back log due to a three-vehicle crash and performed an evasive swerve to the left traveling across the left shoulder and impacting a snow bank, according to police.

The vehicle then jackknifed, coming to a final rest partially blocking the left lane facing a southerly direction.

Lungu was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Police were assisted on the scene by the Falls Creek Volunteer Fire Department and PennDOT.

No other information was provided.
