Traffic Stop Leads to DUI, Assault Charges in Punxsutawney

PUNXSUTAWNEY BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) – Police say a Johnsonburg man is facing DUI charges while a passenger is facing assault charges following a traffic stop in Punxsutawney early Saturday morning.

Around 3:09 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, Punxsutawney-based State Police initiated a traffic stop on a silver 2009 Ford Fusion at Hampton Avenue and Torrence Street in Punxsutawney Borough, Jefferson County, for an equipment violation.

Police say the driver, identified as a 25-year-old Johnsonburg man, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and/or a controlled substance.

According to police, during the traffic stop, a passenger in the vehicle, identified as a 25-year-old Punxsutawney woman, struck a trooper with the car door and then refused to follow commands given to her by the trooper. The passenger then reportedly continued to resist arrest before being taken into custody.

The name of the driver and passenger were not released.
