Troopers Participate in ‘6-State Trooper Project’ With Focus on Enforcement of Move Over Law

INDIANA CO., Pa. (EYT) – The Pennsylvania State Police Troop A Indiana will be participating in the “6-State Trooper Project” from July 19 through July 25, 2020, with a focus on enforcing Pennsylvania’s Move Over Law.

The “6-State Trooper Project” is a collaboration between the Pennsylvania State Police, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Kentucky State Police, Indiana State Police, West Virginia State Police, and Michigan State Police with the goal of enhancing highway safety, criminal patrol, and intelligence sharing.

Lt. Joseph A. Loughran, the Indiana Station Commander, and the Indiana Patrol Unit will be adopting a “zero tolerance” enforcement approach to drivers who fair to adhere to the requirements of Title 75, Section 3327, which is entitled “Duty of Driver in Emergency Response Areas.”

The section, also known as the Move Over Law or Steer Clear Law, requires that drivers approaching an emergency response area pass in a lane not adjacent to the emergency response area, if possible; or, if passing in a nonadjacent lane is impossible, illegal, or unsafe, pass at a careful and prudent reduced speed.

Police will also be proactively watching for distracted, aggressive, and intoxicated drivers and will be enforcing the following Title 75 violations:

  • Title 75, Section 1621 – Texting While Driving
  • Title 75, Section 1622 – Handheld Mobile Telephone
  • Title 75, Section 3314 – Prohibiting Use of Hearing Impairment Devices
  • Title 75, Section 3316 – Prohibiting Text-based Communications
  • Title 75, Section 3714 – Careless Driving
  • Title 75, Section 3736 – Reckless Driving
  • Title 75, Section 4527 – Image Display Device

Police ask that drivers please help keep our highways safe for everyone in the Commonwealth.
