Tuesday’s Baseball Wrap: Punxsy Rallies on the Road to Beat Altoona


ALTOONA, Pa. (D9Sports) – Trailing 3-0 going to the sixth, Punxsutawney scored three times in the sixth and three more in the seventh to stun homestanding Altoona, 6-3.

Daren Byers sac fly in the top of the sixth with one out tied the game before the Chucks took the lead on an error, a fielder’s choice and a groundout in the seventh.

Isaac Stouffer was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs for Punxsutawney with Brandon Matthews going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Derek Huey 2-for-4 with an RBI. Tyler Richardson was also 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

Stouffer got the win in relief of Matthews going 1 ⅔ innings allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two. Matthews went 5 ⅓ innings allowing three unearned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six.

CLEARFIELD 2, PENNS VALLEY 1

HYDE, Pa. – Jakob Sorbera and Cade Walker combined on a six-hitter to lead Clearfield to a 2-1 win over visiting Penns Valley.

Sorbera came within an out of a complete game before reaching the 100-pitch limit. He went 6 ⅔ innings allowing one run on six hits and three walks while striking out eight. Walker got the final out to earn the save.

Matthew Tobias took the loss allowing two unearned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings.

Both of Clearfield’s runs came in the third inning after Penns Valley took a 1-0 lead in the first.

Seth Bumbarger had an RBI for Clearfield with Nathan Barr and Hayden Williams scoring the runs.

Cameron Shaffer scored on an RBI from Dylan Treaster for Penns Valley.

CURWENSVILLE 17, GLENDALE 2, 5 INNINGS

FLINTON, Pa. – Behind a big day from Christian Bakaysa visiting Curwensville rolled to a 17-2, five-inning win over Glendale.

Bakaysa was 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run, a walk, two runs scored and five RBIs to lead the Tide.

Bryce Timko also went deep in the win going 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored with Avery Francisco and Jake McCracken adding doubles.

Francisco was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and McCracken going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Ralph Evans added a 3-for-4 day with two runs scored and an RBI, Josh Terry 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs and Zach Brewer walked, scored twice and drove in one.

Bakaysa got the win going three innings allowing a run on four hits while striking out four.

Terry gave up a run on a hit while striking out one in an inning with Francisco pitching a scoreless inning walking one and striking out two.

JOHNSONBURG 5, BROCKWAY 4

JOHNSONBURG, Pa. – Neil MacDonald reached on an error in the bottom of the seventh scoring Kacey Raubenstrauch from third to give Johnsonburg a 5-4 win over Brockway.

Brockway had tied the game in the top of the seventh when Zane Puhala scored on an error by Raubenstrauch, the centerfielder, on a two-out single by Santino Inzana.

But Raubenstrauch reached on an error with one out in the bottom of the inning and stole second to set up the winning run.

Zack Zameroski was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for Johnsonburg with Raubenstrauch scoring twice.

Angelo Inzana had a double, a run scored and two RBIs for Brockway.

Austin Greene got the win in relief going one inning allowing an unearned run on two hits and a walk while striking out one. Gavin Elmquist went six innings for the Rams allowing three unearned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven.

Tyler Serafini took the loss allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out six in 6 ⅔ innings.
