CLARION, Pa. (EYT) – A Brookville man faces aggravated assault and related charges after allegedly attacking another patron at a downtown bar in Clarion Borough.
Court documents indicate the Clarion Borough Police Department filed criminal charges against 22-year-old Zachary Walter Sparks, of Brookville.
According to a criminal complaint, around 12:57 a.m. on Thursday, May 10, Officer Maxwell was dispatched to a bar on Main Street in Clarion for a report of a fight in progress. Reports from the bar indicate one individual was badly injured and bleeding. Clarion County 9-1-1 told Officer Maxwell they were dispatching an ambulance.
Officer Maxwell and Trooper Foust, of Clarion PSP, arrived at the scene and entered the bar. The bartender identified two individuals – Zachary Sparks and another known man – who were involved in the fight. Trooper Foust stayed with the two men while Officer Maxwell went across the bar to the victim, according to the complaint.
Officer Maxwell noted that on his way across the bar he observed blood on the floor, as well as rags covered in blood.
Officer Maxwell found the victim holding a large number of napkins to the back of his head. He could see a laceration on the victim’s head through the napkins and also noted that the victim had a large amount of blood running down his neck and onto his chest.
The victim stated that he was at a table with a group of people when two individuals, later identified as Zachary Sparks and the other known man, came over and asked if they could have a cigarette. The victim said they told the two men they didn’t have any cigarettes, and the men became upset and would not leave them alone. He said the two men kept pushing in closer, at which point the victim got involved to get the two away from his friends, the complaint states.
The victim and Sparks then had an altercation in which Sparks used a beer bottle to hit the victim on the back of the head. The other known man also had a bottle and attempted to hit the victim, but was restrained and disarmed by the victim’s friends. The victim stated that he was hit in the back of the head, then hit two additional times, once in the nose.
Officer Maxwell noted in the complaint that the victim had blood coming from his nose.
Officer Maxwell then spoke with two of the victim’s friends, who stated that they were involved, but only to try to stop the two men from further harming the victim.
Officer Maxwell located the two bottles used in the altercation and they were taken as evidence. He then spoke to the bar staff about reviewing video of the incident.
According to the complaint, in the video, Officer Maxwell could clearly see Sparks and the other man walk up to the victim’s table. The two men appeared to get very close to the victim and his friends. Officer Maxwell observed the victim trying to get Sparks away from the table, at which point Sparks began fighting with him, and Sparks struck him with a beer bottle.
The complaint states that the other man could be seen trying to get to Sparks and the victim, but he was held back and disarmed by the victim’s friends.
Officer Maxwell and Trooper Foust placed Sparks and the other man under arrest and transported them to the Clarion Borough Police Station.
Sparks was arraigned at 3:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 10, in Magisterial District Judge Duane L. Quinn’s office on the following charges:
– Aggravated Assault
– Simple Assault
– Disorderly Conduct Engage In Fighting
– Harassment – Subject Other to Physical Contact
– Public Drunkenness And Similar Misconduct
Unable to post $10,000.00 monetary bail, he was lodged in the Clarion County Jail.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, with Judge Quinn presiding.
There were no court documents on the other man involved in the incident.
