HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Clarion wrestling team overcame blizzard conditions on the East coast to win two of three dual matches on Sunday, defeating Columbia 19-13 and Sacred Heart 33-7 and falling in a tight 25-21 decision to Hofstra.
The team improves to 6-10 overall on the season as a result.
Brock Zacherl and Dustin Conti each went 3-0 on the afternoon, with a host of other Golden Eagles winning two of three matches on the day. Clarion won the first match of the day against Columbia, clinching the decision with a win in the last match of the day. The match against Hofstra also came down to the final bout, with the Pride winning in the heavyweight match to clinch the win. The Golden Eagles got a big win in the final match of the day, cruising past the Pioneers for the 27-point win.
The Golden Eagles needed every point in their win over the Lions in the first match of the day, with Travis Jones notching a signficant 11-1 major decision over Vince Pallone at 125 pounds. Brock Zacherl came within one point of a major as well, beating Joe Moita 11-4 at 141 to put Clarion ahead 7-3. His brother Brodie won at 149 over Matt Leshinger to put Clarion ahead 10-3, but the Lions won each of the next three matches to go ahead 13-10 in the match. The Golden Eagles countered by winning the final three matches on the mat, with Dom Rigous tying the match at 13 with a 6-3 win over Mike Fetchet at 187. Conti picked up his first win of the day with a 3-1 decision over Troy Hembury, and Zack DeLuca ensured the victory with a 6-3 decision over Garrett Ryan at heavyweight.
The match against the Pride was similarly tight, with Roshaun Cooley putting the Golden Eagles ahead 5-3 with a 17-0 technical fall over Marcus Begay at 133. Brock Zacherl picked up another technical fall with an 18-2 win over Connor Muli, but the Pride responded with back-to-back wins by fall to make it a 15-10 Hofstra lead. Evan DeLong got the Golden Eagles back in it with a 9-0 major decision over Bobby Feher at 165 but the Pride countered by a win by fall at 174. Rigous claimed a major decision over Cory Damiana and Conti pulled out a 2-0 win over Omar Haddad at 197 to tie the score, but Mike Hughes won by major decision over DeLuca to seal the win.
The Golden Eagles won eight of 10 matches on the mat against the Pioneers in the nightcap, including five by major decision or better, to dominate Sacred Heart. Patrick DeWitt opened the bout with a close 7-6 win at 125 and Cooley notched a major decision over Tim Johnson to make it 7-0. Brock Zacherl won by technical fall yet again, this time winning 17-1 over Alex Harnsberger, and Brodie Zacherl claimed a major decision over Jay Oakes to put Clarion ahead 16-0. Mike Pavasko earned his first win of the day with a 16-5 decision over Patrick Grosso at 174, and Conti and DeLuca each won to wrap up the 2-1 day for Clarion.
